Do you have old, damaged walls in need of renovation? Not sure how to restore them? Our expert Raphaël Estrella has the answers. He will guide you on how to renovate old walls by applying reinforcement mesh using Prestonett G, a powdered rough coat filler, and Prestonett F, a powdered finishing filler.
A skim coat mesh is used in renovations on risky substrates, meaning cracked surfaces. To solidify a substrate, three layers are applied, with a glass mesh between two layers of filler. This way, the substrate will be covered with a layer of filler, reinforced with the fiberglass mesh, and topped with a second layer of filler. This method ensures a smooth, crack-free surface. The goal is to achieve a flat plane to prevent future cracks.
Before starting the application, make sure to treat any micro-cracks with a suitable filler. We recommend using Prestonett’s elastic paste filler, which is fiber-rich and has excellent adhesion! If you’re unsure how to properly fill a crack, watch our expert Raphaël’s video, “How to Fill Micro-Cracks,” where he explains the filling steps.
To correctly apply a skim coat mesh, we recommend using two fillers: Prestonett G, a manually applied powder undercoat filler that can be worked on for a long time, and for the finishing touches, Prestonett F, a powder filler that offers good glide and a long working time.
First, prepare the filler (if it’s a powder filler) and let it rest for a while. Generously apply the filler to the entire wall to facilitate the mesh adhesion. Now you can apply the mesh! However, be careful when handling it: use gloves, as the fiberglass mesh is very irritating to the hands. After applying the mesh wet on wet, carefully smooth it into the filler. Apply and adhere it delicately to the surface with firm pressure. You can then trim the excess with a cutter. To reinforce the substrate, apply a second strip, taking care with the joint between the two meshes. Then cover with a second coat of wet-on-wet filler and continue this process on all the walls. Let it dry for 24 hours, then sand with 150-180 grit sandpaper before dusting.
You’ve reached the final finishing step! Prepare your second finishing filler, Prestonett F, and apply it in a single coat. Sand with 180-220 grit sandpaper and let it dry.
All that’s left is to apply your desired layers of paint! With Prestonett G and Prestonett F fillers, you’ve seamlessly embedded the mesh, resulting in a smooth and durable surface!
