How to Apply Coating on a Surface Previously Covered with Fiberglass Wallpaper?

In interior design, fiberglass wallpaper is often used to hide wall imperfections. However, if you want to replace it with paint, applying a coating is essential. In this video, our expert explains the best approach to achieve a smooth, professional finish.

Step 1: Removing the Fiberglass Wallpaper

If you’re removing fiberglass wallpaper before applying a coating, you might be surprised by the condition of the wall underneath! Although applied like traditional wallpaper, fiberglass wallpaper is often used to conceal small cracks and surface flaws.

Before applying your coating, the first step is to completely remove the old fiberglass wallpaper. However, since it is made of glass fibers, we strongly recommend wearing protective gloves, a mask, and safety glassesto prevent skin and respiratory irritation.

Once the wallpaper has been removed, sanding the wall is essential. This ensures that all traces of the old covering are eliminated and that the surface is perfectly smooth.

Can you coat directly over fiberglass wallpaper?
Technically, yes—but we do not recommend it. Coating over fiberglass wallpaper can cause blisters and even cracks in the finish. If this happens, here are a few tips to fix surface blistering.

Step 2: Applying a Primer Paint

After ensuring that the surface is clean and smooth, the next step is to apply a primer paint to stabilize the surface.

Primer paint—also known as undercoat primer—helps the coating adhere properly and prevents blistering. The reason? Fiberglass wallpaper and traditional wallpaper adhesives are water-based. If you apply coating directly on the surface without primer, the water in the coating could reactivate the old adhesive, leading to moisture blisters.

To avoid this issue, our technical expert strongly recommends using:

• Glycero-based primer (oil-based paint), or
• A low-tension acrylic primer to stabilize the surface before coating
