Are you planning to cover a large surface area and have chosen to use an airless sprayer to apply your joint tape? Our technical expert, Jérémy, provides all the essential advice you need to master this important step. In just a few minutes, learn how to apply joint tape with an airless sprayer using Bagar Airliss J, a special airless spray-ready joint treatment compound. Save valuable time on your projects with this method.
First, it is important to inspect your gypsum boards to determine their condition. Ensure the gap between boards does not exceed 2 mm. If there are holes, fill them with Prestonett Interior Filler. Not sure how to do this and prefer some guidance? Check out our other videos.
Once the holes are filled, make sure all screws are properly set and fill the screw holes to achieve a perfectly smooth and even surface. With these preliminary steps completed, you can move on to the next stage: applying joint tape with an airless sprayer.
Beissier and our technical advisor Jérémy recommend using Bagar Airliss J, which offers a two-in-one solution. It not only adheres the tape but also provides a full coat of compound.
Before using Bagar Airliss J, mix it for about a minute until you achieve a smooth paste. It is recommended to use an airless sprayer with a minimum flow rate of 5 L/min for optimal performance. The compound should then be sprayed using a 5.33 nozzle, as advised by our technical expert.
Your surface is ready, and your compound is prepared: let’s get to the practical part. Follow these 7 steps to apply joint tape using an airless sprayer:
To start : use the airless sprayer to apply the compound along the beveled edge of your surface. A tip from our expert: fold the joint tape along the crease to ensure it is positioned correctly and to ease the application. Apply the strip on the filler and use a smoothing spatula to remove any excess compound and secure the tape in place. Apply a thin layer of plaster over the tape with the sprayer and smooth it again with the spatula. Allow it to dry for 24 hours.
After drying, sand the area with 150-180 grit sandpaper. Our expert recommends using an electric pole sander for faster and less tiring results. Sand along the length of the joint tape, and remove any dust with a brush.
Before finishing, you need to apply a full coat of compound. Spray it with the same nozzle in cross passes, keeping about 80 cm from the surface. Ensure the sprayer is perpendicular to the surface without tilting it. Smooth the wall with an appropriate tool, like a trowel or smoothing blade. After drying, sand again with 150-180 grit sandpaper.
And that’s it! By using just one product, Bagar Airliss J, and the Airless system, Jérémy was able to work twice as fast as he would have with manual application. Your surface is now ready for two finishing coats of paint.
