By embedding a tape in a suitable compound, you create a flexible, resistant bridge that absorbs slight building movements. It is too fine, dries too quickly, and does not offer sufficient adhesion to hold joint tape correctly over time. Bedding tape requires a specific product, known as a jointing compound, whose consistency and formulation are designed to penetrate the tape, coat it, then harden to form a durable bond. Using a smoothing filler at this stage risks delamination, cracking or adhesion failure as soon as temperature or humidity levels vary. A lightweight finishing filler is not intended to replace a jointing compound. It comes after this stage, to smooth and level the entire treated surface.
